It may seem outrageous to claim that buying a vintage Gibson acoustic guitar can change someone’s life. But the truth is, a musician who invests in one of these prized guitars may find the sound he or she has always been looking for. Because of the excellent craftsmanship and the resulting rich, strong sound, Gibson guitars from the past may alter the way a singer or guitarist sounds.

So what would keep someone from making this change? There are a couple of hurdles. Availability is the first problem, though a diligent search can turn up several great examples of the vintage Gibson acoustic guitar. *Remember, when looking at and pricing these instruments, the company does make guitars that are modelled after guitars from the 1950s and 1960s but are brand new. With the fine-tuning of the bidding, buying and shipping processes it’s possible to purchase a fine instrument and have it delivered to your door in perfect condition.

The second reason can be a little complicated. Many vintage Gibson acoustic guitars have been purchased by collectors or successful musicians, which means that they aren’t scattered around the world one at a time, in the homes of amateur players and semi-professional guitarists. But this may also mean that a vintage Gibson acoustic guitar will be more difficult to buy, even if you are able to locate one. Some of the best instruments made by Gibson are not for sale. If they are, they will command a very high price.

Consider the vintage acoustic guitar by Gibson known as the archtop. Look for a Lloyd Loar L-5 and two or three others of this design. In the flattop category, vintage Gibson acoustic guitars from the 1930s through the 1960s are probably the most "collectible" and should provide great sound and playability.

Beginnings of the Epiphone Acoustic Guitar

Epiphone acoustic guitars were eventually manufactured by a company founded in 1837 by a man named Anastasios Stathopoulo. A Greek timber merchant’s son who was not to tread in his father’s footsteps. He instead crafted musical instruments such as violins, lutes, and the lioutos, a traditional Greek instrument. His creations were to eventually bear his name, A. Stathopoulo.

In 1917 the company came to be known as The House Of Stathopoulo. Its name was changed by Epimanonodas Stathopoulo, or Epi, as he was known, the son of Anastasios. By that time he had been in charge of the company for two years due to his father’s death. He was just 22.

After the end of World War One when Epi realized that the mainstay of his company, the mandolin, did not have the popularity it once had he made the decision that the company was to manufacture banjos for the first time. This adaption of his product line was prompted by the growing popularity of the banjo and the need to change with the times. He carefully ensured that the high quality of workmanship that the company was noted for would continue in the manufacture of the new product line.

The name Epiphone became officially registered in 1924. Epimanondas, who was now president in addition to general manager, united his nickname Epi and phone, the Greek word for sound, to give the company a name reflected the change in its identity.

The recorder series of guitars were the first ones Epiphone manufactured. The guitars were not too popular. 1928 was the first year they were produced. Sales were not strong because the guitars were thought to lack volume, be overly ornate, and not large enough in size. Another essential factor for sales of the series that was critically lacking was celebrity endorsement.

Three years later, in 1931, the new archtop guitars, in contrast, became very popular. The earlier flaws were not a factor as the guitars did not lack celebrity endorsements, were made larger, and had volume desired.

The switch from banjos to the manufacturing of guitars happened at just the right moment in time as the banjo’s popularity started to decline. Thus Epiphone was able to escape the fate of the majority of the other banjo manufacturers. This was thanks to Epimanondas Stathopoulo and the keen business sense he possessed. In fact it was one of just a few banjo manufacturing firms to make the transition successfully to guitars.

Epiphone acoustic guitars made from 1937 to 1956 are among the most desirable of instruments to today’s collectors. They are considered to be among the highest quality vintage archtop guitars of factory manufacture ever made. Among these most desired of collector’s the guitars that are the most coveted are the professional class models that the reputation of the company was built on.

Manuel’s son Pablo was born in 1957 and presently makes guitars himself aided by a smallish staff. Although the Contreras II C-7 guitar is at the low end of the Contreras line, you still get the benefits of the Contreras tradition of making top quality classical guitars. The Dreadnought body with spruce top provides this acoustic guitar with a strong, rounded sound that you cannot get from either the Yamaha or Ibanez guitars.
When you hear this guitar for the first time, it seems that the Regent series is an attempt of Alvarez to imitate more expensive brands, as it does provide a nice, distinct tone, but doesn’t quite have the depth of a Yamaha. Guitar Parts and Kits Help You Build Your Own Custom Guitar

Many guitarists would like to try their hand at building their own guitar but don’t know where to start. They don’t have the knowledge or skills or the tools to build a guitar from scratch. Fortunately there are several solutions to their problem buying guitar parts and assembling them yourself,or a guitar kit. First decide whether you want an electric guitar or bass, or an acoustic guitar.The process for building an electric guitar and bass is the same. Once you decide what you want you can purchase the goods and get to work.

Guitar Parts or Guitar Kits for an Electric Guitar

If you want an electric guitar there are several things you can do. The first is to buy all your parts from various sources and put them together yourself, then finish with a spray can. You can even find parts already finished that you simply put together. There are some problems with assembling already finished parts. If the parts don’t fit, you’ll have to sand or otherwise work on those parts thereby destroying or marring the finish you just purchased. It’s probably better to buy unfinished parts, unless you can find factory authorized parts that are guaranteed replacements. That way you’ll know that all parts from the same brand will fit together. If you do buy parts from separate sources you may have to tweak them. You shouldn’t need a full workshop full of tools, sandpaper, files, and maybe a chisel should be all you need for shaping the neck or neck pocket, which is where you’ll be likely to run into problems. You might need a reamer if your tuners don’t fit the drilled holes in the neck you have. A reamer is better than a drill, because it self centers, and it isn’t as expensive. Other than that you’ll need a soldering iron for the electronics and assorted screwdrivers for attaching the bridge, tuners, pickguard, strap buttons, etc.

You can also buy an electric guitar kit. The kit will come with everything you need except tools, You’ll usually need screwdrivers, sandpaper, a hobby knife, and soldering iron. Some kits come with electronics that snap together so you won’t need the soldering iron. Be prepared to do some tweaking to get parts to fit though. The tuners in some of the kits aren’t always the best, that should be about the only thing you’d want to replace. I’ve gotten Saga guitar kits where the bridge was actually higher quality than the stock parts. Look around the net for reviews, a lot of people have had great success with Saga Guitar kits, they’re cheap, easy to assemble and need minimal tools. Most people will want to finish them with spray cans, this is the cheapest option for a one-off guitar.

Acoustic Guitar Kits

If you’re wanting to build an acoustic guitar then you’ll probably want an acoustic guitar kit. These come in various stages of construction, some are almost like building a guitar from scratch, some are almost like the "bolt together" electric guitar kits. Unless you’re really serious, get a guitar with pre-bend sides. If you don’t you’ll need a specialized tool called a bending pipe, which is expensive to buy. It’s simple to build, but you may have problems sourcing the parts, and actually bending the sides is a challenge too. You’ll probably need a few more tools than you would building an electric guitar from parts. You will probably need a small plane, like a block plane and possibly a saw, and router or purfling cutter a specialized tool for cutting channels for the binding. It’s much trickier building an acoustic than an electric guitar, and you’ll need at least a some woodworking skills. Finishing the acoustic guitar is basically identical to the electric.

If you’re serious about building a guitar there are numerous options open to you depending on your skill level and tool chest. You can search the internet for reviews, prices, and other peoples experiences on building a guitar before you decide if it’s right for you.

Epiphone Hummingbird Acoustic Guitar Review

If your looking for a cheap acoustic guitar then one option is the Epiphone Hummingbird acoustic guitar. At under $300 there is no doubt that the price is low but does it offer value for money, especially when compared to the likes of the Seagull S6.

Since the Hummingbird comes in at $80 less it is surprising that it doesn’t get as much high praise as the Seagull S6. The guitar is beautiful to look at which is usually a sign with lower priced guitars that the money has gone into the looks of the guitar rather than the quality but I can assure you that this isn’t the case with the Epiphone Hummingbird.

Of all the cheaper versions based on Gibson’s Hummingbird guitar this Epiphone version is without question the best on offer, in fact considering the difference in price it is astonishing how close to the Gibson model this has come. The tones from the guitar offer wonderful value for the price and with a change of strings can be even better.

The size of the neck on the guitar makes it an ideal cheap acoustic guitar for beginners as it is very slimline and comfortable and has a superb playing action, for the price this is hard to find so it shows what a bargain the guitar is.

I’ve tested several styles of guitar playing on the guitar and found the Epiphone Hummingbird to take to them all without any problems, which is fantastic if you are a play anything kind of person. I found it particularly good with a little acoustic rock.

Would I buy an Epiphone Hummingbird? Maybe there are a few very good Cheap Acoustic Guitars available for a similar price but if I did buy one I would certainly have no complaints and it is definitely in the top ten acoustic guitars in its price range.
